In June 2010, Hillstomp will release their new studio CD, Darker the Night on Portland’s In Music We Trust records. As with past Hillstomp releases, the music draws heavily from north Mississippi trance blues, a bit from Appalachia, and burns with the energy of punkabilly, but Darker the Night charters new territory, peering into the darker corners of the band’s psyche while maintaining the celebratory nature of Hillstomp’s raucous blues-billy stomp.

In addition to Hillstomp’s signature trance blues, Darker the Night showcases banjo songs, a small guest list of elite Portland musicians and even adds the sweet sound of a baying hound to the recording. On Darker the Night, Hillstomp has duct-taped together a powerful and distinctive album of original songs, traditionals, and the occasional revamped blues classic.

Hillstomp’s previous studio CDs, One Word and The Woman that Ended the World were highy acclaimed. The Woman that Ended the World received rave reviews nationally (Magnet), overseas (UK, Norway & Italy), and debuted at #15 on the USA’s Roots Airplay chart. The album was also chosen as the Best Local Album of the year by the Willamette Week, (Portland’s largest weekly) ahead of indie favorites The Decemberists and Sleater-Kinney, and rated Top 50 of 2006 by the UK’s Blues Matters magazine.

In August 2007, Hillstomp released their first Live CD, After Two But Before Five, capturing the high-octane energy of their live performances. Hillstomp has wowed crowds at the Open House Blues Festival in Belfast and the Spitz Festival of Blues in London and has toured in Italy, Ireland, The Netherlands and Belgium.

The band continues touring non-stop in the United States where they’ve developed fan bases in cities up and down the West coast, performing as far east as Detroit. Along the way, they’ve shared bills with the Avett Brothers, The Devil Makes Three, Blitzen Trapper, Southern Culture on the Skids, Scott Biram, Lucero, Bob Log III and O’Death, to name a few. They’ve also showcased their act on local radio shows including Oregon Public Broadcasting’s LiveWire, and at festivals across the country.

In July & August of 2010, they will tour the Western half of the United States with Reverend Horton Heat and Split Lip Rayfied in support of Darker the Night.
